Hedda Gabler

Henrik Ibsen · 1890 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A general's daughter comes back from a honeymoon she endured to a villa she never wanted, married to a plodding scholar whose professorship is suddenly in doubt because a reformed rival has produced a masterwork in manuscript. Bored, pregnant and in possession of her father's duelling pistols, she begins to work on the rival, on the devoted woman who copied his book, and on a judge who wants something from her. The first critics found the heroine unaccountable and the Munich premiere a failure; the part is now among the most contested in the repertory.
