Laughter in the Dark

Vladimir Nabokov · 1932 CE · Novel · Russian · Modernist

A Berlin art critic with a wife, a daughter and a settled reputation follows a sixteen-year-old cinema usherette out of the dark and spends all three on her. She already has a lover, a cartoonist who despises them both and is glad to move in on the arrangement. Nabokov gives the whole plot away in his opening paragraph and then tells it anyway, on the grounds that only the detail was ever the point.
