The Key

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki · 1956 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

A professor of fifty-six begins a diary he half intends his wife to read, recording what he now needs in order to be aroused and what she withholds; she keeps one of her own, insisting she has never touched his. A young man the couple have marked out for their daughter is brought into the house, and both diaries record his effect while denying any design. Two accounts of one marriage, each written to be found by the other party.
