Diary of a Mad Old Man

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki · 1961 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

Seventy-seven, half-paralysed by a stroke and kept going on injections and a nurse's charts, Utsugi records the one appetite he has left: his son's wife Satsuko, a former dancer who lets him watch her shower and prices each favour against a cat's-eye ring. He begins designing his own gravestone around a rubbing of her feet. Tanizaki's last completed novel, written while he was himself an invalid, and the funniest thing he ever did.
