The Makioka Sisters

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki · 1948 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

Four daughters of a fading Osaka merchant house spend the years before the Pacific war arranging matches for the third of them, Yukiko, who is past thirty and refuses each candidate in silence, while the youngest makes dolls, takes lovers, and will not wait her turn. The seasons come round in cherry-viewing at Kyoto, a firefly hunt, the flood that takes out the Ashiya river, and letters between households comparing lineage, salary, and family illness. Tanizaki, who put the Genji into modern Japanese three times, serialized it while wartime censors suppressed it as insufficiently martial; it now reads as the last full portrait of the Kansai bourgeoisie.
