The House of the Sleeping Beauties

Yasunari Kawabata · 1961 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

Old Eguchi is given the address of a house above the sea where elderly men pay to spend a night beside a naked girl drugged asleep who will not wake, on the condition that nothing further is attempted. He goes back five times, and each sleeping body returns him to a different woman from his life. Mishima wrote its introduction; García Márquez said his own late novel was impossible without it.
