Beauty and Sadness

Yasunari Kawabata · 1964 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

A married novelist takes the train to Kyoto to hear the New Year bells and to see Otoko, the girl he ruined twenty-four years earlier and then made famous by writing a novel about it, now a painter living with a beautiful and much younger pupil. The pupil has plans of her own for him and for his family. Kawabata's coldest late book, and the one that turns his own subject — the artist feeding on a girl's life — back on the artist.
