Thousand Cranes
Kikuji is summoned to a tea ceremony by a woman who was his dead father's mistress and who means to introduce him to a girl carrying a thousand-crane kerchief; the father's other mistress is there too, and later her daughter. Raku bowls four centuries old carry the lip-marks of everyone who drank from them. Cited by the Nobel committee in 1968, though Kawabata denied it celebrated the tea ceremony.
