The Master of Go

Yasunari Kawabata · 1954 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

The undefeated Master Shūsai, sixty-four and ill, plays his retirement match against a younger challenger across six months of sealed moves, adjournments and hospital rooms, with a newspaper man at the board recording everything except the go. Rules on time allowance have replaced the old etiquette. Kawabata covered the real 1938 match for the Mainichi and rebuilt his dispatches into a document.
