Extinction
A telegram reaches Franz-Josef Murau in Rome, where he has settled to teach German literature to a private pupil and to be as far from his family as he can manage: his parents and his brother have been killed in a car crash at Wolfsegg. He must go back to the Austrian estate he has spent his adult life denouncing, to its Orangery and its Children's Villa and to what the household did between 1938 and 1945. Bernhard's last and longest prose work.
