Peer Gynt

Henrik Ibsen · 1867 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A boastful farm boy who lies about reindeer hunts carries off a bride from another man's wedding, tumbles into the hall of the mountain trolls, and then spends a lifetime abroad chasing fortune while the girl who loves him waits in a hut. Slave-trading, prophecy in the desert and a madhouse in Cairo all pass under him without ever settling the question of what he is. Ibsen wrote it in verse as a closet drama and thought it unstageable; Grieg's incidental music for the 1876 production carried it into the repertory anyway.
