The Satanic Verses

Salman Rushdie · 1988 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

Two Indian actors fall from a hijacked jumbo jet over the English Channel and survive the drop into Sussex, one acquiring a halo and the other goat's horns and hooves. Their London lives run alongside dream chapters set in a desert city where a merchant is receiving revelation, and in an Indian village where a girl of butterflies leads a pilgrimage toward the sea. The dream chapters drew the fatwa that put Rushdie into hiding for a decade.
