The Lady from the Sea

Henrik Ibsen · 1888 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A country doctor's second wife, raised at a lighthouse on the open coast, cannot settle in her husband's inland fjord town and swims every day in water she finds stale; years before, she pledged herself to a ship's mate who vanished after a killing at sea. When a steamer brings him back to claim the promise, her husband has to work out what hold he actually has on her. It is the first Ibsen play to move its conflict inward toward myth and symbol, and its demand that a woman choose in full freedom was seized on by the theatres at once.
