The Master Builder

Henrik Ibsen · 1892 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A successful architect, whose career was made by a fire and who keeps a gifted young draughtsman down for fear of the youth coming to unseat him, is visited by a girl of twenty claiming he promised her a kingdom ten years ago in her home town. She wants him to climb the new house he has built and hang the wreath on its tower himself, as she once watched him do, though he can no longer bear heights. It opens Ibsen's last phase, where the social argument gives way to symbol and the question becomes what an artist costs the people around him.
