When We Dead Awaken

Henrik Ibsen · 1899 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A celebrated sculptor idling at a coastal spa with his young wife recognises, in a white-clad woman shadowed by a nun, the model who gave him her body and her youth for his masterpiece and then walked out of his life. He proposes a summer in the high mountains; his wife has already found a bear-hunter to go off with. Ibsen called it a dramatic epilogue and wrote nothing after it, and the eighteen-year-old Joyce reviewed it as the work of a living master.
