Little Eyolf

Henrik Ibsen · 1894 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A writer comes down from the mountains having abandoned his book on human responsibility, meaning to give himself instead to his lame nine-year-old son; his wife wants her husband back to herself and resents the boy for taking him. An old woman appears at the door offering, for a small fee, to rid the house of anything that gnaws. What follows is Ibsen's coldest anatomy of a marriage, and the play in which he set a child most nakedly at the centre of one.
