The Maias
Carlos da Maia grows up at the Ramalhete, his grandfather's shuttered Lisbon house, on the wreckage of a marriage nobody will explain to him; he qualifies as a doctor, fits out a laboratory he never uses, and falls for a woman lately arrived from Brazil. Around him his friend Ega and the whole Lisbon of clubs, races and newspapers talk brilliantly and do nothing. Planned as the centrepiece of a Balzacian cycle of Portuguese scenes that Eça never finished, it is the central Portuguese work of its century.
