Satyricon

Petronius · c. 60 CE · Novel · Roman · Classical

Encolpius, a disgraced young drifter, moves through the towns of southern Italy with a treacherous companion and the beautiful boy they both want, quarrelling, thieving and running from what they have done. The long surviving centerpiece is a dinner given by Trimalchio, a monstrously rich freedman who serves disguised food, recites bad verse and rehearses his own funeral for his guests. Only fragments survive, but they hold the earliest European novel of low life and the model for the picaresque and for every satire on new money since.
