Dead Souls
Nikolai Gogol · 1842 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian
Chichikov, a plausible stranger with a carriage and excellent manners, arrives in a provincial town and starts buying up serfs who have died since the last census but remain taxable property on paper. Landowner by landowner - the sentimentalist, the bully, the miser - he works across the countryside while the town speculates about what he wants them for. Russia surveyed through a swindle.
