Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka

Nikolai Gogol · 1832 CE · Short Story · Russian · Romantic

A Ukrainian beekeeper sets down what gets told on winter nights at his farm: a devil who pockets the moon on Christmas Eve, a blacksmith who flies to Petersburg to fetch the Tsarina's slippers, a lost charter, a drowned girl who needs a witch picked out from among her sisters. Village fairs, card games played against the dead and grandfathers who wake in the wrong place run alongside a strain of real horror out of the Cossack past. Gogol's first success, written in Petersburg by a homesick provincial who was mailing his mother for costume details and superstitions while he worked.
