Three seminarians walking home for the summer holidays lose the road in the dark and beg a bed at a farm, where the old woman who puts the philosopher in the sheep pen turns out to want something else from him. Days later he is summoned to a rich Cossack's house to read three nights of psalms over the coffin of a daughter who died asking for him by name. Gogol attached a note claiming he had merely repeated a folk legend word for word, and folklorists have never found it.
