Dracula
A young English solicitor travels to a castle in the Carpathians to close a property sale and finds that his client keeps no servants, throws no reflection, and does not intend to let him leave. The purchase brings the count to England, where a ship runs aground at Whitby and a circle of friends start comparing diaries, letters and phonograph cylinders to work out what is draining one of them. Stoker's assembly of documents, built out of Le Fanu and several years of folklore reading, fixed the vampire in the modern imagination.
