The Steppe

Anton Chekhov · 1888 CE · Short Story · Russian · Victorian

A nine-year-old boy is put into a cart with his uncle and a priest and sent across the summer steppe to a town where he is to be enrolled in school. The party falls in with a wool convoy, and for days there is heat, a thunderstorm, singing at night, and the drivers' talk of a bandit nobody has seen. Chekhov's first work for a serious literary journal, and the one that stopped the critics treating him as a writer of comic sketches.
