Ivanov

Anton Chekhov · 1887 CE · Play · Russian · Victorian

A provincial landowner in his thirties, deep in debt and out of love with a wife dying of consumption, spends his evenings at a neighbour's card table where the daughter of the house believes she can save him. The young doctor attending his wife has decided he is a scoundrel and says so at every opportunity; Ivanov half agrees and can explain nothing, least of all to himself. Chekhov's first full-length success, written in ten days for a Moscow comic theatre and rewritten twice before he would let the type stand.
