The Seagull

Anton Chekhov · 1896 CE · Play · Russian · Victorian

On a lakeside estate a famous actress is spending the summer with her novelist lover while her son puts up a stage in the garden for a symbolist piece of his own, with the girl from the property across the water in the only part. Everyone here loves someone who is looking elsewhere, and the young man's demand for new forms in the theatre reaches his mother as an insult. The 1896 premiere at the Alexandrinsky was a debacle - the house had come for a benefit comedy and jeered the first act down - and Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko rescued it two years later at the Moscow Art Theatre, which took the bird for its emblem.
