Gooseberries
Two friends caught in the rain take shelter at a landowner's house, and over tea the vet tells the story of his brother, a clerk who starved himself for thirty years to buy a small estate with a gooseberry bush on it. The brother has his property now and is entirely happy, and the telling turns into an attack on happiness itself and on the contented man who hears nothing through his own front door. The middle panel of the little trilogy of 1898, in which the same three men take turns as narrator and audience.
