Three Sisters

Anton Chekhov · 1901 CE · Play · Russian · Victorian

A year after their father's death, three sisters keep his house in a garrison town eleven years after the family left Moscow, and the officers of the artillery battery are the only company in the province worth having. The brother they educated for a professorship marries a local girl who takes the house room by room, the middle sister teaches herself grey, and the plan to sell up and return to Moscow is raised every year and never begun. Written for the Moscow Art Theatre with each part shaped to a particular actor, the first play Chekhov composed knowing exactly whose voice would carry it.
