Playtime

Jacques Tati · 1967 CE · Film · French · Contemporary

A coachload of American tourists and a man in a raincoat with an appointment he never manages to keep pass through a Paris of glass towers, trade stands and a restaurant that comes apart on its opening night, the Eiffel Tower glimpsed only as a reflection in a swinging door. Tati built the whole district on open ground outside the city, shot it in 70mm, and spread the gags across the full width of the frame so that no two viewings catch the same ones. The production ruined him, and the film is now the most admired comedy in European cinema.
