Monsieur Hulot's Holiday
A pipe-smoking bachelor in a too-short raincoat arrives at a small Atlantic beach hotel and, without ever meaning to, unsettles every ritual of the French summer holiday, from the hushed dining room to the tennis court to a shed full of fireworks. The gags are nearly wordless, built from sound, posture and timing in the silent-comedy tradition Tati carried into the sound era. It introduced Monsieur Hulot, the figure he would follow through Mon Oncle to Playtime.
