Every Man in His Humour

Ben Jonson · 1598 CE · Play · English · Renaissance

A worried father follows his son to London on the strength of an intercepted letter, and finds him among a jealous merchant, a boasting soldier and a poet whose verses are not his own. The servant Brainworm changes disguise faster than any of them can keep track, until a justice of the peace has to sit and unpick the whole day. Jonson's first success fixed the comedy of humours, in which each character is run by one dominant appetite that the plot tests to breaking.
