I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

William Wordsworth · 1807 CE · Poem · English · Romantic

A walk by Ullswater turns up a belt of daffodils strung along the waterline, ten thousand of them tossing their heads in a dance the lake's own waves cannot out-do for glee, and the speaker gazes at them without yet knowing what he has been handed. The wealth is only counted later, when the flowers flash upon that inward eye which is the bliss of solitude. The scene comes from Dorothy Wordsworth's journal for 15 April 1802, which records it first; her brother's version is among the most anthologised short poems in the language.
