Pied Beauty
Glory is given to God for dappled things — a brinded cow, rose-moles stippled along a trout, finches' wings, fresh firecoal chestnut-falls, and a landscape plotted and pieced into fold, fallow and plough. Every trade with its own gear and tackle and trim belongs on the list, and so does whatever is counter, original, spare and strange. Ten and a half lines: a curtal sonnet, a form Hopkins made by scaling the fourteen down in strict proportion, written at St Beuno's in the summer of 1877.
