The Story of a Worm

Yi Chong-jun · 1985 CE · Short Story · Korean · Contemporary

A small boy disappears on the way home from his lessons and is found dead, and the man arrested for it turns out to be someone the family had trusted with him. His father tells what came after: a neighbour brings the mother into her church, and what she finds there works on her until she resolves to go to the prison and grant the killer her forgiveness face to face. Yi took the case from a Seoul child murder of the early 1980s, and Korean readers have long put the question it raises — who is entitled to forgive, and on whose behalf — against the politics of pardon under the military government.
