Crime and Punishment
A destitute former student in Petersburg, Raskolnikov, argues himself into the belief that extraordinary men are entitled to step over the law, and murders an old pawnbroker. What follows is fever, evasion, a drunkard's family he cannot stop helping, and a magistrate who circles him with conversation rather than evidence. Murder as a philosophical experiment, and the slow ruin of a conscience.
