Demons
A provincial town takes delivery of a returning aristocrat of terrifying charm and a young organiser assembling a revolutionary cell out of gossip, blackmail and one planned murder. The liberal fathers of the 1840s watch their sons turn theory into a body, while the governor's wife lends the enterprise her drawing room. Dostoevsky built the plot from the Nechayev affair and aimed the satire at the generation Turgenev had named, caricaturing Turgenev himself as the visiting novelist Karmazinov.
