Pickpocket

Robert Bresson · 1959 CE · Film · French · Contemporary

A young man in Paris with no work and a mother he will not visit teaches himself to lift wallets, learns a three-man relay from a professional, and fills a diary with the argument that superior men should be allowed to steal. The camera stays down on hands moving between coat and pocket, and the performers, none of them actors, are directed to speak flat and look past each other. Bresson's transposition of Raskolnikov's theory to a city of racetracks and railway stations, and the film Paul Schrader built his account of transcendental style around.
