Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad · 1899 CE · Novel · English · Modernist

Marlow, sitting on a yawl anchored in the Thames, tells how he took command of a river steamer for a Belgian trading company in Africa. Everywhere upriver he hears about Kurtz, the company's most productive agent, and his errand narrows to fetching that man out of the last station. A voyage into the self's own capacity for barbarism; the horror at the center is human.
