The Golden Cockerel
Dionisio Pinzón cries public announcements in a poor Jalisco town for whatever coins he is handed, until a man at a cockfight gives him a bird too badly cut up to be worth killing. Nursing it back starts a run of luck, and the luck attaches itself to a singer called La Caponera, who follows the fairs from one palenque to the next. Written in the 1950s as a text for the cinema and not published until 1980, it is the third and last of Rulfo's books.
