The Metamorphosis

Franz Kafka · 1915 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

A travelling salesman wakes in his own bed transformed into an enormous insect, and his first worry is that he has missed his train. Sealed in his room, he listens through the door while his family recalculates its finances and its affection. Alienation made literal: love curdling into disgust.
