The Storyteller
In a Florence gallery a Peruvian recognises photographs of Machiguenga tribespeople and, in one of them, the friend who vanished from Lima twenty years earlier: a Jewish student with a birthmark across half his face who argued that the forest peoples be left alone. Alternating chapters give the wandering speech of a hablador who holds a scattered people inside one story. Kafka's salesman turns up in the myths.
