The Way to Paradise
Chapters alternate between the activist Flora Tristan, crossing France in 1844 to rouse workers and women to a new order, and her grandson Paul Gauguin, leaving Europe fifty years later in search of an unspoiled world. Each pursues a paradise in a different register, social and artistic, and each is beaten back by the body and the age. Vargas Llosa built it on documented lives, as a historical fiction by the Nobel laureate-to-be.
