Burger's Daughter
Nadine Gordimer · 1979 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary
Rosa is fourteen and waiting outside a prison with a quilt and a hot-water bottle for her mother; the watching crowd sees a composed girl, not the one inside the coat. Her father, an Afrikaner communist doctor, dies in the same system a few years on, and his death releases her to apply for a passport and find out whether a private life is available to her. Banned within a month, and carrying the full text of a 1976 Soweto students' pamphlet.
