None to Accompany Me

Nadine Gordimer · 1994 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

Vera Stark, a lawyer for a foundation that fights forced removals, spends the negotiation years arguing squatters' claims in front of officials who used to sit on the other side of the table. As the settlement takes shape around her she moves steadily out of the marriage, the house and the family arrangements that carried her through forty years. The title comes from a Basho poem about walking on alone at nightfall in autumn.
