A Sport of Nature

Nadine Gordimer · 1987 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

Hillela is expelled from boarding school, passed between two aunts who cannot place her, and thereafter goes where her appetites take her: exile households in Tanzania and Ghana, marriages to revolutionaries, the diplomatic circuits of the liberation movements. She holds no politics, only a total absence of the colour instinct she was raised with. Gordimer called the type a freak of nature and gave her the history the principled could not carry.
