My Son's Story

Nadine Gordimer · 1990 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

A schoolboy skipping class walks into a cinema foyer, finds his father there with a white woman, and grasps that the political life he was taught to revere keeps a second address. Sonny, a coloured schoolteacher who left the classroom for the movement, runs a household, a lover and a detention record in separate compartments. The boy was named for Shakespeare by a father who taught the sonnets; the telling is his revenge and his apprenticeship.
