The Conservationist
Mehring, a Johannesburg industrialist who bought four hundred acres as a weekend possession and a tax position, learns that the police have buried an unidentified African man in his third pasture and left it at that. Through a year of drought, fire and flood he keeps coming back to the farm, to the black families who actually live on it, and to that patch of reeds. Gordimer's Booker winner, interleaved with passages of Zulu religious belief.
