July's People
When the townships rise and the airports close, a liberal Johannesburg couple and their three children are driven six hundred kilometres in their own vehicle to the village their servant of fifteen years goes home to. In two rooms of mud and thatch the vocabulary that ran the household — the keys, the wages, the name they call him by — stops meaning what it did. Gordimer imagined the civil war a decade early, and put the whites in the huts.
