The Pickup

Nadine Gordimer · 2001 CE · Novel · South African · Contemporary

Julie Summers, the daughter of a wealthy Johannesburg family who has turned her back on its comforts, falls in love with a car mechanic who is in the country illegally. When he is deported she follows him to his home village in an unnamed desert country, where she must live by a different set of rules. Gordimer's first novel after her Nobel Prize turns her long attention to apartheid-era South Africa towards migration and the pull of a place one has chosen.
