A Lover from Palestine

Mahmoud Darwish · 1966 CE · Poem · Arabic · Contemporary

The beloved addressed across these poems has eyes, a tattoo and a wound, and also a coastline, a house key and a road closed at a barrier, and the verse refuses to settle which of the two is the figure for the other. Written in Haifa between detentions, they take the conventions of the Arabic love lyric and hand them to a country. The identification held so firmly that Darwish later complained his readers heard only the allegory.
