The Call of the Toad

Günter Grass · 1992 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

On All Souls' Day 1989, at a Gdańsk market stall, a widowed German art historian and a widowed Polish gilder reach for the same bunch of chrysanthemums, and out of the coincidence comes a scheme: a German-Polish cemetery association to bring the expelled home for burial in the soil they were born on. Reconciliation is entered as a business plan, with shareholders and a fleet of Bengali rickshaws. Toads croak under all of it as an omen.
